About Doody’s Book Reviews™ Since 1993, Doody Enterprises, Inc., has been dedicated to providing timely, filtered medical information and expert commentary to busy health care professionals who need to stay abreast of the overwhelming volume of literature and research findings in their specialty areas. At the core of the clinical information database are Doody’s Book Reviews™, which evaluate books and electronic products across a wide range of clinical specialty areas in Basic Science, Clinical Medicine, Nursing, Allied Health, and Other Disciplines. For each specialty, there is an Editorial Review Group Chair (ERG Chair) who coordinates reviews of titles in his/her field. The Chairs work with over 5,000 academically-affiliated clinicians who prepare a formatted review and fill out a ratings questionnaire for each title. The reviewer’s name and affiliation appear with each review. Unique to the review process is the star rating assigned to each review. The stars correlate to the numerical ratings that are derived from an 18-point questionnaire completed by the reviewer in the course of assessing the title. The questionnaire highlights 16 different elements (such as the authority of the authors, and the quantity, currency, and pertinence of the references) of the title. The reviewer must rate each element essentially on a 5-point scale. The rating system helps ensure that each review is as fair and as objective as possible. Thus, Doody’s Book Reviews™ incorporates a good blend of quantitative and qualitative analysis in its reviews. As a result, they have become well known around the world for reflecting a timely, expert, unbiased approach to rating medical publications. Doody Enterprises sends its reviews to more than 300,000 health care and health information professionals through a weekly e-mail service and personalized web pages. It is estimated more than 1,000,000 individuals worldwide regularly consult Doody's Book Reviews. | |
LWW Doody's Core Collection A Convenient Package of over 20 LWW Books Considered Must-Have Titles from Doody's Enterprises. This collection consists of 203 titles books from Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, one of the world's most respected medical and healthcare publishers, that are considered essential by Doody's Enterprises. For more information, visit: www.doody.com/dct A core title is a book that represents essential knowledge needed by professionals or students in a given discipline and is highly recognized. One of the unique attributes of DCT is the score assigned to each title. After all selections were final, the Library Selectors scored each title on five fundamental collection development criteria: authoritativeness of author and publisher; scope and coverage of the subject matter; quality of content (including timeliness); usefulness and purpose; and value for money. They evaluated each title on a scale of 0 – 3 in each of the five criteria. These scores were averaged together to product the score displayed next to each title. What do the scores signify? A score of “0” signified that the title was not considered a “core title” in the criterion in which it received a “0.” A “1” meant the librarian judged the title to be “good” in that criterion; a “2” meant “very good,” and a score of “3” signified “excellent.” If a Library Selector could not score in a criterion because of a lack of familiarity with a title or some aspect of a title, then the Selector assigned a “NS” (“not able to score”) grade. Titles with a composite score less than 1 were automatically removed from the list. Title scores provide collection development specialists with another way to compare core titles within a given specialty. It should be noted that a score does not represent a purchase recommendation.
